Sunday January 25th was a beautiful sunny day in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. We had another huge turnout for the clinics and the kids had a fine day as they prepared for the Spring 2010 youth baseball season. The Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken tryouts are next week end February 6th and 7th and Pleasant Hill High School. Base on the clinics, this should be another great year for Billies baseball.

Sunday January 24th was another wet and rainy Oregon day but that did not stop the excellent turn out for the Babe Ruth youth baseball clinic held in Pleasant Hill. As I tried to count heads at the Pleasant Hill High School and Middle School gyms it looked as if at least 60 youngsters from Creswell, Cottage Grove, Pleasant Hill, Oakridge, Dexter and Lowell were participating in today’s clinic.

The coaching staff was well represents with Babe Ruth coaches, Pleasant Hill High School players and other guest coaches. The coaches and kids seemed to be working well together and things seemed to be going smoothly.

As the boys worked on the mechanics of pitching, batting and fielding you could see the excitement in their faces. There was no doubt that the kids are enthused about getting back into the game.

If you did not make this clinic you are still welcome to attend next Sunday’s clinic – January 31st. Rain or no rain this will be another great clinic as the players get ready for the Spring 2010 season.

Tryouts and registration for Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth will be held on February 6th and 7th at the Pleasant Hill High School gymnasium. Players between the ages of 7 and 14 will register at that time. T-ball registration will be held at a later date. Youth from Lane County Oregon school districts of Pleasant Hill, Creswell, Oakridge, Cottage Grove play in the Pleasant Hill division of the Willamette Valley Babe Ruth Baseball League.

Photos of the January 24th clinic have been added to the Photo Album so check them out!

One of your most important jobs in baseball is fielding the ball. On any team be it professional, college, high school, Babe Ruth, Little League or any other baseball team both the outfield and infield are extremely important positions. Some youth become upset when selected for the outfield and this should not be. When your coach selects you for the outfield it is usually because you are able to stay alert, have a good arm and are able to field the ball well. Remember that both the infield and outfield often determines if their team is going to win the game. In this video Jack Hubbard offers some great tips on the approach to ground balls.

Several baseball camps have and will be taking place this summer for kids that play or would like to play in organized youth baseball leagues such as Babe Ruth Baseball or Little League

Baseball. Other camps have been organized for those that play high school baseball or will be going into high school this coming year and look forward to being on their high school baseball teams. In the Willamette Valley area both the University of Oregon (Ducks) and Oregon State University (Beavers) are offering a variety of these programs for our youth.

At these camps the players not only baseball they are taught many important aspects of winning such as developing good work habits, the importance of academics and the development of a winning attitude. Coach George Horton and his assistants Jason Gill and Andrew Checketts along with a number of the best high school and junior college coaches in the state have been selected to teach the University of Oregon camps.

On June 29-30 and July 2-3, 2009 at Moshofsky Center at the University of Oregon the All Skills Camps were held. At these camps all players received a high level of instruction in individual skills from the proper mechanics of the swing and bunting to the importance of the mental approach to hitting along with training in such areas as base running. Additionally position training was taught with catchers instructed on hitting, footwork, receiving, blocking, pitching sequence and the management of a pitching staff. Pitchers were instructed in proper mechanics and delivery, controlling the running game, the mental aspects of pitching and the fielding of their position.

Additional Youth Baseball Camps will be held July 20-23 and July 27-30th. A High School Prospect Camp will be held July 31 – August 2. The upcoming baseball camps will feature sessions on the fundamentals of the game, teamwork, work ethic and the importance of the competitive drive along with instruction in all aspects of baseball. The players are to receive both individual, group and team instruction. And it is not all work a lot of fun will take place as the players compete against those in their own age and ability level.
