Not just another rainy day in Eugene, Oregon. April 16, 2011 was opening day for Willamette Valley Babe Ruth baseball. Family members huddling under umbrellas and broad smiles on the faces of the boys and girls. Like so many opening days in the pasts I was reminded of a saying by baseball legend Joe Dimaggio, “You always get a special kick on opening day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.” For Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth and all the other divisions of Willamette Valley Babe Ruth our 2011 opening season can be summed up in 2 words Play Ball!!!

Opening Day 2011
Pleasant Hill AAA Running Strong
On Sunday April 3rd the Pleasant Hill AAA was matched against Springfield Major Minor 60 at the Willamette Valley Babe Ruth Complex. The AAA boys under the leadership of Coach Jeff Putnam were victorious taking their 3rd straight win of the season. Congratulations Pleasant Hill AAA and keep up the enthusiasm.

PH MM 70 vs Sheldon MM 70
The first game for the Pleasant Hill Billie’s Major Minor 70 team was played on Wednesday the 30th and the team started out the season with a win. PHBR Major-Minor Billies beat Sheldon Irish Major-Minors 8 to 4. This was not a high scoring game but every year Sheldon is one of the hardest teams to beat. Sheldon has a great baseball program and my hat is off to them, but the Pleasant Hill boys got them. Both teams played very hard with great moves and plays on both sides. This was anyone’s game.
Our Pleasant Hill boys played good and did not let up even when a mistake was made.
This was a great victory for the beginning of the year, to bad this was a pre-season game.
I hope that this is a sign of how the boys are going to play for the remainder of the season.
Go Billies

Babe Ruth Family Loses Home to Fire

On March 17th the Jeff Putnam family of Pleasant Hill, Oregon lost their home to a fire. Thankfully no one was injured but the home and its contents were a total loss. Jeff is this year’s Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth AAA Coach. Jeff, Kamala and the children have been involved in PHBR program for a number of years.
Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth encourages each of our PHBR member families to offer their assistance if needed and words of encouragement to the Putnam family.
A fire such as this is tragic but the Putnam family is strong and I know they will pull through.
In the words of Bob Feller American Baseball Player (pitcher), born 1918. “Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way life is, with a new game every day, and that’s the way baseball is.”
A fund has been set up for the Putnam family at The Register Guard Credit Union on Beltline in Springfield.
