Billies Take Field With Emeralds

Billies Take Field With Emeralds

Pleasant Hill Billies at Eugene Emeralds

Pleasant Hill Billies Babe Ruth Baseball took the field with the Eugene Emeralds Baseball team when they attended a game at P.K. Park on June 20, 2011.

At the Emeralds game a group of players from Coach Kirk Miller’s Major Minor team and his 12U Bobby Doerr Classic team were in attendance. This Billies age 10 – 12 had a good time meeting the Eugene Emeralds players prior to the game with the Boise Hawks. After meeting the Emeralds the Billies players ran to the catcher, pitcher, infield and outfield position with the Emeralds players that play those positions. Between frequent trips to the snack bar the Billies rooted for the Emeralds during the 9-4 win over Boise. Click Here for More Game Photos

Prior to the Emeralds game players and families held a tail gate party in the P.K. Park parking area.

At the tailgate party Coach Miller recognized his Major Minor Team members as he congratulated each player for their fine job. Coach Miller presented certificates to Haydn Kuhnhausen, Tyler Cook, Kaleb Miller, Torrey Gage-Tomlinson, Tanner Maryanski, Brett Ollivant, Seth Weinheimer, Justin Oljace and Colton White. Team members Braden Pruitt, Collin Good and Dylan Miller were not in attendance and will receive their certificate later.

Bobby Doerr Classic a Fun Event

Bobby Doerr Classic a Fun Event

USMC-Bobby-Doerr-Classic

Having served in the United States Marines I hold our military in high regard. It was a pleasure to have an Honor Guard from USMC at the annual Bobby Doerr Classic. For those that have never attended the Bobby Doerr Classic a youth baseball tournament in Junction City, Oregon, it is one you will not want to miss in the future. Hopefully at next years Classic we will again be treated to the presence of Baseball Hall of Fame player Bobby Doerr and the United States Marines or an Honor Guard from one of our other military services.

As many of you know, Bobby Doerr turned 93 this past April. While Bobby Doerr is not physically as strong as he was as a young man – any of us will do well to show the spirit that he shows at his age.

At this Junction City tournament it is hard to miss the smiles on our young baseball players as they receive the autograph of Bobby Doerr or have their picture taken with him. As you watch those kids you know that many of them also have a goal of someday playing in the Major League.

Each of us should make it our goal to follow the example of Bobby Doerr in service to youth and expect the same from each generation that follows us. Time passes fast and before we know it today’s kids are becoming adults with children of their own.

Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth had a number of teams that participated in this years Bobby Doerr Classic. In addition to local teams some of our players participated as part of the Willamette Valley All Star teams. You will find a number of photos of the Classic at the Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth website and hopefully more photos will be received so that they can also be posted.

In Pleasant Hill and the surrounding areas of Creswell, Cottage Grove, Dexter, Lowell, Jasper, Oakridge, Drain and the rural areas of Springfield and Eugene that participate in Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth, we are fortunate to have many outstanding youth athletes. If you are reading this and are one of those youth or a parent of a youth thank you for your participation. If you are not presently participating in Babe Ruth Baseball we want you to know that you are encouraged to do so.

As a grandfather and father I am proud of Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth and encourage its continuing support in both time and donations. While spring baseball season may now be over there are continuing projects that need to be completed year around to keep the organization going. If you hear from a coach or other person asking for your assistance in a summer field day or other help please offer your support. By the way – on July 9th from 9AM until noon we will be reconditioning field #1 and families will be receiving an email on this and it will be posted on the Pleasant Hill website calendar.

Thank you all for another great year of youth baseball and let us work together now to make next years even better for the youth of our communities.

Early Innings – How Sports Contributes to the Making of a Community

Early Innings – How Sports Contributes to the Making of a Community

Early Innings is more than just a baseball film. This short baseball movie speaks of the commonality of baseball regardless of age, the size of your town or how you were introduced to the game of baseball. As you watch this film you can feel the sincerity of people and how a sport from a Babe Ruth baseball team to high school baseball, softball, football or basketball team, to a semi pro sports organization contribute to the making of a small town. Burlington Iowa the home of the Burlington Bees, like Pleasant Hill, Oregon and our surrounding communities of Creswell, Lowell, Dexter, Oakridge, Jasper and Cottage Grove is a small community. As you watch this film you will feel the pride of the community as the film speaks of the dreams and goals of many young ball players whose goal it is to make it to the major leagues as a player, coach, manager or umpire and to the people of the community that have pride in their baseball team.

The Burlington Bees are located in Burlington, Iowa a town of 26,000 the smallest town in the country with a minor league baseball team. This is a wonderful short film for kids, young adults and older adults alike. A big thanks goes out to Rod Blackhurst for allowing Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth Baseball to show this film. As you watch it think of the many ways high school and youth sports is important sports to the community of Pleasant Hill and how we must find ways to continue and grow our high school and younger sports programs.

You will be remembered as a U.S Marine, father and grandfather devoted to the youth of the Pacific Northwest, Lane County, Pleasant Hill high school sports, Oregon, Billies baseball, a friend to many and the list goes on. I know you would have enjoyed the humor in this short video and as you leave us your memory will remain.

Baseball Field Named for Stan Smith

Stan Smith 1929 - 2011

Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth Baseball has renamed Bambino Field to Stan Smith Field in recognition of Stanley “Stan” Smith, United States Marine staff sergeant and Pleasant Hill, Oregon baseball legend who passed away on May 8, 2011 at the age of 82.

Stan was born Jan. 4, 1929, in Grey’s Harbor, Washington, graduating from Montesano High School in Washington in 1946. At 21 Stan Smith served honorably in the Marine Corp serving with Company G, 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. In December of 1950 during the Korean War, Stan was in the Battle of the Chosin Few in which an estimated 60,000 Chinese troops surrounded 30,000 United Nations troops. While suffering heavy losses the UN forces broke from the encirclement to inflict great loss on the Chinese forces. A victory won that came with the loss of life for many of our troops, pride, pain and sorrow for Stan and his fellow Marines.

Stan coached baseball for Spokane High School in 1961, South Eugene High School from 1971 to 1973, and for Sheldon, Willamette, Thurston and Pleasant Hill high schools. For 29 years he worked as a printer at The Register-Guard, retiring in 1992.

Stan was the #1 Billies baseball fan and assisted the Pleasant Hill high school sports program in any way he could. Up until the time of Stan’s passing you would find him in regular attendance at Billies baseball games.

In 2006 Stan suffered a stroke and while this may have slowed his speech down it did not stop this Marine from continuing to help out with the Billies baseball team. Stan especially liked assisting with batting and when the players were at the batting cages you would find Stan at the cages sitting in his lawn chair coaching the players.

Stan received disability from the Marines and from this he contributed to batting cages for the Pleasant Hill high school baseball team. In 2006 Stan contributed the scoreboard at Pleasant Hill high school that bares the name of this great man.

For many years, not only would you find Stan supporting the Pleasant Hill baseball team, you would also find him supporting other Billies sports in many ways such as sweeping the basketball court floor at halftime during home games.

In honor of this fine man Pleasant Hill Babe Ruth has renamed Bambino baseball field and it will now be called Stan Smith Field.

OoRah Stan Smith and while we will all miss you dearly your name and the love you have shown to Pleasant Hill sports will go on for generations to come!
